3.8 - Lover's Walk

Spike is back in Sunnydale, but he's changed...

***

SPOILERS

This is another one of those episodes that goes in my all time top 10. I think that the writing is just as clever and as fun as it's ever going to be. Spike playing the wounded lovesick puppy is awesome. This is one of those episodes that I remember VIVIDLY from 10 years ago because of some of the things that they did, namely the ending bit with Cordelia and then the cemetery scene that immediately followed.

A fellow by the name of Dan Vebber wrote this, and I think he deserves an emmy. It's hilarious, it's moving, and it's really smart. Spike going to Buffy's mom and talking to her about his love woes is great ("do you have any of those little marshmallows?"), but even greater is when Angel shows up at the door and Spike is antagonizing him like a teenager, making clawing motions at Joyce, etc.

Then, we get the reveal with Oz and Cordy walking in on Xander and Willow kissing. Charisma Carpenter actually gets to show some of her range here and plays emotionally hurt very well. And after these revelations, we have the quiet slow motion moments of reflection that always bring the goosebumps and the emotions...then just when you think it's over and you're really, really sad, you get Spike banging down the highway singing a punk version of a Frank Sinatra song.

Genius, pure and simple. Another example of everything I look for in Buffy, a perfect episode.

Rating: 10/10

What's so cool about this episode is that one person - Spike- can roll into town miserable. then leave so much damage and destruction in his wake, and roll out of town happy. He basically affected the lives of every character in a negative way. It's perfect irony.

It's also the first time we really start seeing Spike's uncanny powers of observation. As when he flat at tells Buffy and Angel that they'll never be friends etc. Spike does this time and time again, telling people what they need to hear but don't necessarily see..
